Have you ever think of the life you are leading now? Is it base on your belief [believe]* or crave [desire]*?Most of us will probably live for the crave [desire] for the 5C (credit card, cash, condo, car and career). Do all these items can really make you happy? For people who don't know what's real happiness are, maybe it will.
Recently I have read a very inspiring and motivating Japanese comic. They mention that there are two kinds of people who have ambition - one is base on their crave (desire), one on their belief [believe]. Actually, the different between crave (desire) and belief (believe) is whether you are the leader or he is. I found that most of the city people live base on their crave (desire). It's so sad if crave (desire) is the one who lead your life.
You may think that you need money to survive but will die if you do not have? We only need the basics to survive, it's the crave (desire) in you that make you think that you need more, don't you think so?
"Some people may think that comics are for kids, but I don't really agree. I think that people who read comics, will have dreams."
*Belief = 信念, Crave = 欲望

人若无欲无求那还算是人吗？咱老孔夫子早就说了“食色性也”是人类最基本的生存欲望。信念这玩意儿是人类填饱肚子了解决性欲了没事干搞出来的。要怎么活那是人各有志，开心就好！

They are many types of desire and material desire (5C) is only one of the many. I disagree comparing the 2 in such light and see it differently from you.
"I DESIRE to become a great man."
"I BELIEVE I'll become a great man."
Be it Desire or Believe, as long as it gives One a direction in life, it's a positive injection. Don't you think so?
i agree that as long as it gives one a direction in life, it's a positive injection. I am using "desire" to play as the bad guy and "believe" as a good one. If "desire" represent 欲望 and "believe" represent 信念, you will see a better picture on what I mean.
The different between English and Chinese:
"I DESIRE to become a great man." cannot be interpreted as "我的欲望是做个好人" and "I BELIEVE I'll become a great man." will be interpreted as "我相信我能做个好人"
That's the magic of Chinese language. "Desire" here represent 欲望 but 欲望 cannot be replaced by "desire" totally, as for "believe" here represent 信念 instead of 相信. I think the terms used here may not be the best but the meaning behind it still exist.
Base on dictionary.com, there are still some differences between "desire" and "believe".
"Desire" means:
1. To wish or long for; want.
2. To express a wish for; request.
3. A wish or longing.
4. A request or petition.
5. The object of longing: My greatest desire is to go back home.
6. Sexual appetite; passion.
Synonyms: desire, covet, crave, want, wish
These verbs mean to have a strong longing for: desire peace; coveted the new convertible; craving fame and fortune; wanted a drink of water; got all she wished.
"Believe" means:
1. To accept as true or real: Do you believe the news stories?
2. To credit with veracity: I believe you.
3. To expect or suppose; think: I believe they will arrive shortly.
4. To have firm faith, especially religious faith.
5. To have faith, confidence, or trust: I believe in your ability to solve the problem.
6. To have confidence in the truth or value of something: We believe in free speech.
7. To have an opinion; think: They have already left, I believe.
In anyway, believe was not used as a replacement for desire. I guess there's still a virtual side of "believe" cannot be replaced by "desire". Don't you think so?
After having a conversation with a friend of mine, he really enlightened me that I should use the word "Crave" instead of "desire", and "belief" to replace "believe". Let's see does it works better now?
